Male Depression - The Silent Killer

Millions of people in the recent world suffer from depression. They struggle on a constant basic to keep the illness under control. Even experts are not in total agreement on how to deal with depression. Every person is different and so is every case.

Male depressionWe live in a fast changing world where it seems we are often at the breaking point of how much we can handle. Depression in women is often easier to diagnose, this happens due to the fact that women still are more open with what is emotionally affecting them.

One of the problems with male depression is that many men are not comfortable talking about what is bothering them. Often men will give enough emotion to reveal something is wrong but to get to the root of the problem it is necessary getting men to go deeper emotionally.

Why do men stop short emotionally? It seems that image is still an important factor concerning male depression. To open up too much is to risk looking weak and often feminine, depressed men are balancing opening up just enough without looking weak. Male depression is often given names like mood swings, cranky, mean or even the strong silent type.

A typical male response to a problem is to fight back but in the case of depression this is a definitely losing battle. Depression is an inner battle that must be addressed internally. Depression can lead to anger but addressing the anger first is not getting to the root of the problem. The anger is one of the symptoms of the depression in men.

Signs of Depression in Men - The Hidden Truth
Male depression often goes undiagnosed in part because depression symptoms in men are not the same as for female depression. Depressed men could show symptoms of depression such as insomnia and sexual dysfunction, violent behavior and rage, excess sexual encounters, abusing alcohol or drugs and suicidal thoughts. However a depressed man often denies his symptoms or tries to numb the pain by working long hours or becoming involved in sports to the point of obsession. These types of behaviors cannot go on forever without a breaking point.

Many normal and joyous life experiences can trigger depression. A new relationship, a new baby, a new home or job, an inheritance, or even winning the lottery. Each of these events can brings additional and sometimes unfamiliar experiences that can restrain a man's ability to effectively manage these new experiences. If such a situation continues long enough a man's self worth can diminish and depression can then set in.

Physical illness and unrelenting pain can also trigger depression. Pain is the body's alert system that something is wrong, and the nervous system is the first responder to engage our defence mechanism to bring relief. When pain persists long enough it creates permanent stress on our natural biological defence system. Once that happens our immune system becomes compromised and can no longer provide necessary relief. One of the common results of this biologically-based depletion is depression. The biological and chemical effects of untreated depression then synergistically trigger an even wider system breakdown that further weakens our body and makes us sensitive to other physical disorders.

How to Deal With Male Depression - Climbing the Slippery Slope
Studies show that spirituality is one of the best ways to deal with depression. The spiritual person can suffer from depression but is often less depressed and is more open to addressing sad feelings. The spiritual man often seeks the help faster. To seek an answer beyond him is one of the most difficult obstacles for men.

Depression is treatable and with the support of a knowledgeable doctor and a skilled psychotherapist who has experience and training working with men in the treatment of depression and anxiety the male depression can release. There are anti depression medications, natural treatments, self help courses, psychotherapy and many others that can make a difference in your life. The key is to get help whichever method you decide to follow. With the right help and the right attitude anything is possible and this includes learning how to deal with male depression. You can lead a completely normal life even if you suffer from the most severe form of depression.

Left untreated depression can take over life. It can alienate you from friends or family. It can cost you your job. I recently read a story about a homeless man living on the streets of Texas. He made good job, had a family, and never imagined in a million years he would end up on the street. However something happened in his life that triggered a severe depression and he lost his job, created distance between his family and himself, and ended up becoming homeless. If this can happen to someone like this man, it can happen to you. So do not sit idle while depression takes over your life.

Depression is an illness just like diabetes, for example. If you have diabetes you know that with proper diet and management of your blood sugar you can lead the same kind of life as someone without it. Depression is the exact same way. It is an illness and as such it can be treated effectively. There is no reason you should sit and dwell in your own self pity. You need to take action and do something to improve your situation today.
